CONTRARIAN

Bruin Polyglot Society empathizes with students who are frustrated with their lack of progress learning languages in school. Our organization is premised upon employing a mindset that ultimately runs contrary to the status quo. Our primary goal is to revitalize language education – in a significant way.

Our Training Program implements a multitude of unique and unorthodox techniques likely not found in a classroom setting. As dedicated language learners, BPS consistently devises methods to train our members’ brains to “think” in the target language.

EFFICIENT

For a polyglot, time is money. BPS ensures that its members prioritize only the most commonly used vocabulary in a target language, followed by grammar rules. We also encourage our members to immerse themselves in the culture, as an engaging language-learning experience is also an efficient one.


COLLABORATIVE

Languages should be learned for the sake of learning itself, not to achieve a particular grade. Sans the usually competitive classroom environment, our members realize that, instead, helpful collaboration breeds success. Whenever a member struggles, others are readily available to assist.

The more BPS members learn a language and the culture that is attached to it, the more open-minded they become. Our hope is that our members will use this intrinsic motivation to connect with their speakers of the target language at a deep level.

BPS may not be competitive, but we are ambitious. Due to the sheer complexity of each language, members of all levels, from beginners to experts, always work towards improving their skills. At BPS, we strive for excellence in all of our pursuits.

WHAT WE DO:

We provide expert guidance to our esteemed members who wish to reach proficiency in any language of their choice. This includes specific autodidactic strategies, exclusive resources and special guest features at our biweekly meetings.

We fundamentally revitalize the language learning experience by dispensing with the conventional approach that often yields mediocre results. Our vocabulary, grammar and immersion exercises transform the once-arduous process into a fun and engaging one, which is so crucial for success.

Our dedicated research committee consists of some of UCLA’s most talented minds who conduct in-depth analysis on the linguistic, psychosocial and cognitive benefits of polyglotism. Such students consistently review and revise our Training Program to ensure our methods are backed by science and are always up-to-date.

For many BPS members, their goal is to become confident speakers in their non-native language in a professional setting. After induction, members can select the “Language Learning for STEM” track or “Language Learning for Business” track for a more structured approach that is tailored to their needs.

As a polyglot, there is practically no endgame to the language learning journey. While daunting for some, BPS reassures its members that with a streamlined approach and unwavering determination, the coveted goal of polyglotism can be reached. While we implore our members to set realistic expectations, we also encourage them to go outside of their comfort zone. Ultimately, our organization cultivates an environment that is collaborative, productive and conducive to the optimal language learning experience.
